An Appreciation: John Getz and the 18th Century Artisans Show

Once again it is the privilege of the author to attend the 18th Century Artisans Show in Lewisburg Pennsylvania. This outstanding show, now in its 8th year, is a labor of love, inspired and produced by John Getz. This show has a homey and friendly atmosphere and is located on the campus of the Country Cupboard/Best Western Hotel and Restaurant in Central Pennsylvania. Much of the relaxed ambience stems from this delightful hotel and the support of it's knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff. Once again this year, John has managed to bring in an impressive array of artisans spanning a wide range of craft. An unofficial tally shows that about 2,000 visitors attended the show during its 2 day run. My fellow Alaskan, Jesse Brennan, was in attendance and was kindly invited by John to display the flintlocks and knives representing the Brennan family at his table.

On a sad note, a huge void in this year's show is the loss of John's father, Don Getz who passed away last fall. Don's jovial presence delighted all who attended and gave the show a special link with the past. As a fitting tribute and homage to this great and pioneering barrel maker who nurtured and supported generations of rifle smiths, Don's table was set up where it has always been with his display of Barn Guns.

Behind the table - an empty chair and the memory of this great man. Rest in peace Don Getz.
